Talking about being a Racist…

Just as I was chatting with my HK mate how racist we can get..

On Roland’s blog he posted all the halirious ‘classic’ English from Apple Daily (a Hong Kong tabloid-like mainstream newspaper, like the Sun in the UK)

Do you big me ?( 你 大 我 呀 ? )
Do you think me didn’t arrive? ( 你 當 我 無 到 ? )
Eight woman, you are good! ( 八 婆 , 你 好 ! )
I give you some colour to see. ( 我 畀 顏 色 你 睇 ! )
Laugh die me. ( 笑 死 我 。 )
Peter piano piano green go to school. ( 彼 得 「 擒 擒 青 」 返 學 。 )
Today I was very black son. ( 今 日 我 好 黑 仔 。 )
What the ghost are you talk? ( 你 講 乜 鬼 ? )
What water are you? ( 你 係 乜 水 ? )
I saw a pork chop. ( 我 見 到 件 豬 扒 呀 ! )

LOL for those who read English/Chinese plus speak Cantonese, I think you are probably choking, like what I just did… . Even though these expressions are extremely culturally idiosyncratic, they nonetheless show how rich Cantonese as a language is. For example, Hong Kong Chinese men call unattractive women ‘pork chop’, and ‘piano piano green’ means someone doing something hastily, and green denotes that someone’s face turns pale because they’re panicking. And of course ‘Eight’ is an adjective used to describe people who are nosy. So no need for me to translate what ‘Eight woman’ is [lah].
Well, as the Chinese cultural critic Lung YinTai puts it, language is a key to another world and culture. I completely agree :)

Updates:  You case you guys haven’t see this, you’ve gotta check out this translated food menu in a random hotel in China… See in yourself.

Race is the New Sex

Recent controversies over whether the Indian actress, Shilpa Shetty, was bullied by the other British contestants due to racism on have sparked a new hype for the Celebrity Big Brother reality show. This incident has rasied even international attention as well as the £3 million withdrawal of commercial sponsorship of Channel 4. As the pretty, upper-class, Indian star gets bullied and boycotted by the three British girls, there are also talks in the US that the government (well, Bush to be exact) is planning to deploy more troop in Iraq… what gets more attention here? Times put it right on,

It says a lot about Britain today that a violent, non-fatal racist attack would generate only a few paragraphs of news coverage. But an on-screen, non-violent row, in which race is a dimension, gets the whole nation talking, and the media and some politicans into a frenzy.

That, though, is the curious power of Big Brother — a format that means little or nothing to the over-40s, but in the post-modern, war-is-only-on-the-news era, it is able to animate millions. Amid all the talk of the death of broadcast television, and the shift to advertising online, there is no clearer reminder of the incredible power of the small screen.

I would recommend for those who have not seen the clips, please see it yourself to feel the ‘power’ of Celebrity Big Brother, if not mass popular culture: Clip (1), (2)

One exerpt of Jade, the main girl who had made touchy remarks directed toward Shilpa, may gave a full-fledge flavor on what this is about,

You need a real life in your life. That is what you need because you’re so stuck up in your ass you cannot think of anything except your own ass. You’re so stuck up in your own ass you can smell your own shit.

In an interview, John McCririck’s, the previous participant of this show sums it up,

‘Institution racism inside her and unconscious of it.. what people in this country who do come from another countries have to endure is the subtle nasty horrible continuous undercurrent of ill-feeling that Daniella is giving her […] Racism is so strong in the country that we ourselves do not understand it.’

You may not agree with what he says, and I have not stayed in this country long enough to make a fair judgement. But living outside my hometown for the real first time, I become much more aware of the attention simly because I am not ‘Western’. One main row in the Big Brother that made me empathize is on food. Shetty got teased at because she put onion in her curry, and that reminded me how some non-Asian folks I met looked at my food and actually said ‘yuck’ or ‘oh that doesn’t look too inviting’ _while I was digging in_. To me, I know that they are kind people, but it diffuses a hinted, subtle kind of ‘outgroupness’ that got to my nerve. But you also ask yourself if this is cultural misunderstanding, or they just do not know that saying things about other food, especially when others are still eating, is considered very ill-mannered in Chinese culture. Also could it be sheer curiosity, and are these legitimate justifications as well?

Finally – I think what the local press have not raised yet is the classism exposed in this incident. The register UK, depicts Jade, the supposedly bully of Shilpa as follow,

Specifically, “Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O’Meara have ganged up on Shetty in the past few days”, while Goody’s mother Jackiey couldn’t pronounce the star’s name and referred to her simply as “the Indian”.

The way this article describes the mother of Jade hinted ignorance of Jade mothers, whether that stemmed from her indifference or class status, we don’t know.
At the end, I just feel severely disturbed by the classism hidden where people were not talking about. As much as Jade has been mean to the other girls, and as much as the other girls ganged up against her, I feel that it is the TV company that capitalize on the constrasting scene between the high-class Indian and ill-manner (which could mean lower-class as well) contestants who happened to be Brits. What do you think of this use of insecurity? On our own class? Gender? Appearance? Or even race?
London is going to get colder soon.

Notes: The title of this blog, ‘race is the new sex’, is a direct quote from the essay Prof. Richard Howells wrote on Borat, which is a fun read as well if you’re interested in this topic.

A day as a Gemini

I don’t believe in Astrology too much but I do have a little daily reader on my google home page.  I was really impressed by how today’s forecast speaks to my heart:

You may feel as if something has been lost in your life, but you must realize that the process isn’t over yet. What feels like a loss one day can turn into a gift as the next positive wave takes you for a ride. You may look back on this period and realize how much you learned about taking responsibility for your actions. Even if you must work hard without receiving your due, remember that the benefits will come if only you don’t quit now.

Hm.. yes I’m procrastinating a bit, but I quite like my flow of work today.  Add oil!  All the CCI mates!  We’ll get there!

Extreme form of procrastination

Working on my essay on a lazy-friday afternoon after extreme food overdose from Italy…

Have been browsing the the gumtree personal ads for a good laugh (I think my flatmates are thinking that I might have just lost it..) Love it.  Another rich research field for socio-cyber-cultural studies..
I’m so evil, but you gotta check out the ads as well…

I love Italy

Yes, there are some of you who complained about Italy.. but I am so glad that everytime I got to experience the best of this country and I can’t help falling in love with the place and the people here!

The story began with G, a wonderful Italian classmate of mine, who invited me to join her for a new year party in Venice. I will upload some pictures soon… but to quickly summarize – Venice had always been amazing, but it is more so when all the tourists had gone home. On the new year’s day, I was strolling along the city and it was gently wrapped in mist. It was a bit chilly, but you felt like accidentally trespassing into an artist’s (maybe Raphel’s since he’s Italiano lol) dream.

Staying in Venice over night is like a dream come true; contrary to most tour books, I highly recommend visiting the city during the new year. Of course, do pack light! I hate carrying the luggages up and down the stairs. Luckily, the boyfriend of G was very nice :) He has been helping me with them…
So Mona, yes, women should be independent, but it’s always nice to have someone taking care of you. :)

Well then I am here in Milan, I am really pleased with the BnB. Since I managed to scrape some promotion code online, the hostel only cost 76 euro for two nights. I have the cheapest option so that the bathroom is external, but if you’re willing to pay more you can have the ensuite room as well. It is immaculately clean and cozy, small in terms of number of rooms but the room size is very reasonable.

I am also very impressed with milan’s public transport system! So efficient and amazingly cheap (4.8 euro for TWO DAYS throughout buses, trams and subway), which makes me not want to go back to London!

Last but not least – The food is amazing, as always! Mangato Molto! I went to a little Naviglio Grande, which is a little Canal with lots of cute cafes and restaurants. Also a lot of cool independent designer shops. I love it, especially when the Duomo area is completely globalized – man, why do we need two H & Ms within like, 100 metres?

Okay that’s a long entry, but I am really happy to share this travelogue with you. Take care and hope you had a great new year as well.

PS: Thanks G, this blog entry is dedicated to the Vaccari family! xxx
