Cathy, I too have many mixed feelings with the iPhone but I seem to see it the other way around. I think App management is Ok at best, surely not a bliss. You can't run tasks on the bacground and even native apps are so compartimented that switching from the address book to the SMS area is an annoyingly long process that takes many more seconds than it should. Essential functionality should have been aggregated so you don't spend most of your time switching between them. For as intuitive as it may be, it wastes *a lot* of time IMVHO.

On the other hand, I love the calendar and I love integration with address book (but this may be because I am an Address Book user).

It's not true that you need ical to sync your google calendars and you don't need a 3rd app either. Here's how to do it: http://posterous.guioconnor.com/multiple-read-write-google-calendars-on-the-i

In fact, thanks to the use of shared google calendars, Anna and I share a calendar we both update via the iPhone.

@Lee - yup reception on the O2 network is pretty bad - bad enough that I am carrying two phones and it's a known problem. Heard that it is better over Orange and Vodafone though.

@Gui thanks for the google calendar top tip! I will play with it tonight! Yup not being able to run tasks on background is a pain for me as there are apps that I love (such as sleep cycle which measures your sleeping activities) would run so much better otherwise.
